The Types Of Spiders You May Find In Your Lake Worth Home
We have far more common spiders in Lake Worth than we could possibly explain in a short article. So, rather than look at common species, let's consider the types of spiders we have in our area. We'll break them down into two sets of two. We'll look at indoor and outdoor spiders and dangerous and harmless spiders.
Indoor Spiders: These are the spiders that get into homes and prefer to live in our homes if they can. Three spider species are on the top of the list. They are the domestic house spider, American house spider, and long-bodied cellar spider (also called the daddy-longlegs spider). We recommend looking up information on these three if you've seen a spider in your home. It is likely one of these three. You may also find jumping spiders, brown recluse spiders, and yellow sac spiders in your home. They are also common house spiders. All of these spiders can live in your home permanently. The methods you use to control them have to do with removing food and water options indoors.
Outdoor Spiders: These are the spiders that prefer to live outside but may sometimes get into Lake Worth homes. Some will stay for short periods. Others may stay longer if they find a food source. On the top of this list are black widow spiders and wolf spiders. The black widow (and also brown widow) prefer to live outside because they eat larger bugs and small animals. The wolf spider gets inside on occasion but is more comfortable in damp habitats not found indoors. Exclusion work and yard work are the two natural methods for keeping these spiders outside.
Dangerous Spiders: There are only two spiders that are considered medically important. They are widow spiders and recluse spiders. There are several species of each type. Professional control is the best solution for these spiders, due to the harm they can cause.
Harmless Spiders: Some spiders are unable to bite because their jaws aren't strong enough to break human skin. The daddy-longlegs spider and other spiders that have weak jaws are not a threat. They are just creepy houseguests that inhabit secluded spaces and help you with your pest control. You don't need to control them if you don't mind having them around.
That is the lay of the land. The methods for controlling common spiders are indoor habitat control, exterior exclusions, outdoor habitat control, and professional treatments. Before we discuss how to apply all-natural spider control, let's look at what it means when you see spiders inside. Understanding this will help you better understand why all-natural pest control works so well.
What It Means If You're Seeing Spiders Inside
There are only a few reasons why you see spiders in your home. Some are obvious. Others are not so obvious.
- Spiders want to start a family where food is found. A spider egg sac can have hundreds of eggs and when those eggs hatch, the mother spider has hundreds of little mouths to feed. She wants to give her offspring the best chance of survival.
- Spiders need water for survival. When they get into your home and find no water sources, they may need to go back outside. Keep in mind that they can derive their water needs from the food they eat, so pest control is also required.
- Spiders do not tunnel through wood or chew holes in your weatherstripping. They must access your home by way of entry points that already exist. When you see a big, hairy wolf spider, it may mean you have a big hairy entry point. Okay. Maybe not hairy. But that spider had to get in through a hole large enough for its body to fit through.
Seeing spiders in your home means you may have an indoor pest problem, plumbing issues, elevated humidity levels, or entry points. Wood rot is a common culprit for allowing big, hairy spiders inside. You need to consider these factors as you consider how to get rid of spiders and keep them out.
Easy & Effective Spider-Prevention Tips
First, it is essential to understand that spider prevention isn't easy. We say "easy" because they're easy to understand. The unfortunate truth is that spider prevention is often hard work—though there are some easy tips on this list. Now that we're clear on that, let's jump into the tips.
- Keep your kitchen and pantry as clean as possible. Bugs find food in these places and spiders come to feed on those bugs.
- Remove trash routinely to limit odors that attract pests. Here's a pro tip: Using a smaller receptacle will force you to remove trash more frequently.
- Make sure to cover your trash. Doing so will prevent flies from getting into your trash and reproducing. Spiders love a home that is filled with flies.
- Fix dripping faucets. That constant dripping leaves water for pests to drink.
- Install a dehumidifier. It might amaze you how much water is in the air of your home.
- Store food in sealed containers, particularly if they come from the grocery store in cardboard, paper, or thin plastic. Some pests eat through these materials.
- Wipe down shelves to remove food debris.
- Remove indoor webs and wipe down the areas. Spiders prefer to create webs where there are already webs present. It sends a signal to them that it is safe to build webs. You don't want to send that signal.
- Use a caulking gun or expanding foam to seal gaps around plumbing that comes in under your sinks.
- Seal gaps in baseboards and door frames. Spiders need those gaps in order to move around in your home.
- Address indoor clutter. Spiders hide in clutter.
- Patch or replace door and window screens that are damaged.
- Seal gaps around your exterior doors. If you can see light leaking in from the outside, those gaps are large enough for pests to use.
- Consider exterior lights. White light attracts insects. Replace white bulbs with yellow bulbs to reduce insect activity. You can install motion-detecting light fixtures if you prefer white light. These only come on when they're needed. Removing light, particularly in entry ways, will reduce insect activity and prevent spiders from creating webs near your fixtures.
- Clean your gutters and get gutter damage repaired. Many pests are attracted to an oversaturated perimeter.
- Trim your landscaping to reduce moisture in your vegetation.
- Address weeds as flowering weeds provide a source of nectar for pests. Bees, wasps, and hornets aren't the only insects that love nectar.
- Remove exterior spider webs and destroy egg sacs. Those paper-like egg sacs can have 300 eggs in them. That's a lot of spiders waiting to make you miserable.
- Manage exterior trash to reduce odors and keep your receptacles away from your exterior doors. It is a short flight for a housefly to go from your exterior trash to the interior of your home.
- Rake leaves and remove yard debris. These promote bug activity and attract spiders.
- Remove yard clutter so spiders don't have places to hide.
Do you see how spider control works? When you manage food, water, and access points, you significantly deter spiders. Sure, it is work. There's no doubt about it. But it is work that helps you control a long list of pests—not just spiders.
